I have noticed that the narrator actually only speaks for twenty-five minutes, and the rest is just ambient sound. There might be a few errors, as english is not my first language and you can't backtrack. As such, there are only a few words which I couldn't quite make out. If you’ve ever found yourself, one evening, wandering down the quiet street in the rain, looking for somewhere to take shelter; you’ll know what a blessing relief it is to find such a place as Rainday Antiques. It halves into view between two residential buildings. The beautiful, double-fronted store with a big window on either side of the entrance. The windows are divided up into square panes, and the glass between the metal bars is ever so slightly wavy, giving the place a dream-like quality. This quaint little establishment stays open 24/7, if you can believe it. Catering to international antique connoisseurs who might arrive at any hour, and casual passers-by. Which of these categories do you fall into? Well, that’s up to you. On a night like tonight, when the street lights are fuzzy haloes and the rain starts coming down harder so that your footsteps make little slaps and squelches on the sidewalk. There’s nothing more welcome than the misty orange light seeping through the antique store’s steamed up windows, and it’s weather-beaten old sign hanging above the doorway, now creaking a little in the damp breeze that says: “Come on in, we’re open! ”. Inside, Rainday Antiques is as cosy as can be. Push open the door, and you’ll find yourself enfolded in a set of heavy red velvet drapes: extra protection against the elements. As you emerge through these into the stores, the drape rings click gently as they glide across the rail. It’s quite a place. Above you is a dome of skylight that looks up into the night when the rain patters satisfyingly on the glass overhead. There’s plenty of space to move around, but every surface is piled high with curios, ornaments, and works of art. To the left of the door is a (unintelligible) stand. And above it, a set of coat hooks. So feel free to unburden yourself of any damp layers, and take this chance to really relax. The owner of this charming emporium is a middle-aged man named Henry. A dapper, in-a-suit gentleman who is sitting quietly in the corner of his kingdom, reading a newspaper. Henry is the kindest man you could ever hope to meet. He’s a true listener, and there are very few people you can say that about. If you ever chose to come find him, you can be sure he’d listen carefully until the end. Then he’d say something very simple, but very wise. Something that would let you know that everything is going to be okay. Now as you enter, he nods at you graciously with an unobtrusive hospitality which means you’re welcome to browse in peace for as long as you like; but if you need him, he’s right here. You make your way over to a bookcase in the back of the store. There, you find packs full of dusty leather-bound books with guilt lettering on the spine. When you take one down and turn it over, you find its pages are etched with gold, and there’s a pale blue ribbon sewn into the spine for marking your place. The pages are densely set with small type and they’re speckled with brown spots. This book is called “Foxing”. Isn’t that a lovely word? You take down another larger book which contains beautiful nineteenth-century watercolours of the flora and fauna of South Africa. Here’s a picture of some beautiful blue flowers fading in the cresses where they’ve opened. It’s a transfixing blue. Conveniently, there’s an armchair right next to the bookcase so you sink into it. It’s rather raggedy, and the stuffing is coming out in some places, but it’s surprisingly comfortable. At your feet, there’s a (unintelligible) containing vintage magazines. Perhaps you could just sit here a while, while the rain pitter patters in the background, immuring you with all this ancient literature, allowing yourself to slip for at least a short time into its magical world. You’re standing beside one of the store’s several grandfather clocks. Its tick is steady, decisive like a single raindrop falling again and again into a metal pale. Compering at the clock’s mechanism which is exposed through its glass front. When you hear a little (imm), it sounds gritty. You look down to find a small, grey and brown dog gazing up at you. This is Rupert, Henry’s miniature wire-head dog. He has round, shining eyes and a little gingery beard. He’s a serious, but very friendly dog, and an excellent judge of character. Straight away, he’s discerned that you’re someone worthy of his respect. He nods his head, gives your shoes a quick sniff, and waddles off to his basket a few feet away. He gets in it and turns around three times before settling down and observing you with a fond expression on his face. He likes visitors to the store, but he’s decided that he likes you most particularly. There’s so much to look at in here. You might just want to stay there for a moment, gazing around you and soaking up the atmosphere in this rain haven. All around the walls stand objects of various kinds. Scanning the room, you take in a mid-century coffee table, a grandfather clock, ticking. An art nouveau hat stand, with several remarkable feathered hats hanging from it. A guilt mantlepiece mirror, streaked and dotted with age, and a dappled grey rocking horse with a red saddle and a long, silvery mane. You go up to the hat stand and touch the grand (??? ) the hats. It’s a blue sculpted hat, with a gold brim designed to be worn at a tilt. A feathered plume, tied presumably to match the hat, is soft and slightly grainy to the touch, held in place by a rhinestone pin. How philosophical, these items seem somehow, gathered here in defiance of the passage of time, and certainly with no concern whatsoever with the weather. Some are over a hundred years old. And yet here they are, looking forward to a new chapter of life. Beginning with the moment when they meet that special someone who feels compelled to take them home. In a dimly lit corner of Rainday Antiques, stands a writing desk, covered with a blanket on which are laid out numerous, smaller items. One of these is a box of old photographs and postcards. As you leave through, you glimpse vintage postcards of European cities and snow-capped mountains, black and white beaches, interesting rock formations and a donkey in a straw hat. There are group snapshots of men in cricket whites. Families awkwardly gathered for a stagy photograph. Cartoons of terriers and kittens in baskets and a set of a clearly much cared for Spaniel. Some have spidery handwriting on the back, mostly eligible. You turn over a postcard from Holland, with a windmill on it. “Here (??? ), I’m having a lovely time. We have just been for a walk and as I write this, it is pouring with rain. Thanks for the books! Love, Barbara. ”. All these memories once belonged to somebody else but could now be yours for the taking. That’s the funny thing about memories. They’re very adaptable. The store smells of old books and radiators, with a slight fresh scent; that smell is coming from your wet umbrella as it drips into the stand. Every so often, the lights of a car streak through the window illuminating the darker corners of the store. In that corner, you see a row of leather-bound books and a fine holding roodscreen. Its silk sheets are endraped in Japanese sceneries: houses with special pointy rooves and round trees. A bridge, parching over a river. The sound of the car passing is a loud sigh, as the rain seems to bring up its tempo before resuming its steady rhythm. You could stay here all night just breathing in and looking at things. Thinking about their stories. In one corner of the store, you’ll find a glass cabinet filled with crockery. If you take a closer look, you’ll be able to inspect a striking art deco piece with sharp triangles for handles, patterned with bright geometric squares, in orange and black. A small case lined with velvet sits next to the teeter, containing a collection of teaspoons with ornamental handles. You can almost imagine the ambience of a long-ago tea party. A conversation punctuated by the delicate clinking of teaspoons on porcelain and ambienced, like tonight, by the comforting sound of rain on the windows. If you asked Henry, he’d tell you that every antique has a story to tell. He likes to say that he never takes anything for his store unless there’s a fantastic tale behind it. It’s a bit of a lie, though. If he likes something enough, he’ll just go ahead and make up a story about it, such as this vintage little toy car, which he says used to belong to a member of the British Royal Family. He hasn’t got any paperwork to prove it, unfortunately. But then again, there’s nothing to disprove it either. The car is bright green, slightly rusting at the edges. But in its hayday, it would surely have been the perfect vehicle for a young prince or princess to take about a turn in the royal garden. It has a long bonnet, but the rest of the car is all seat. There’s a large steering wheel sticking up in the center of the car so that driving it might feel like driving a mini tractor. It’s open-top, though. There’s no roof at all so it’d be no use on a night like tonight. The rain outside seems to be coming down even harder, but the atmosphere inside of the store remains peaceful and unchanging. Every so often, Henry lets out a small “mmm” as if to express some sense of profound relaxation, and the pages of his unwieldly newspaper rustles as he turns them. Every now and then he regards you, from moment to moment, over the top of his half-moon spectacles, to check you’re not in need of anything before returning to his reading. You move around the store quietly, occasionally picking up something and turning it over in your hands. Sometimes, you return to the raggedy armchair to rest, and contemplate your surroundings. Each time you look around, something new catches your eye; a model ship, perhaps? Or a movie poster from the golden age of cinema, maybe a blond teddy bear wearing a bow-tie? Whatever it is, you gaze at it for some time, wondering: “Where has it been? Who owned it before? Has it lived a long life with many different owners? Has it travelled the world? Or has it been treasured faithfully by one person until now? And what journey might it be about to embark on next? ” -----------.

First submission, first attempt at a story. Inspired by you guys and was not prepared for trying to format so please forgive me. If I've done anything wrong please let me know, thanks. It was three thirty in the morning and a light but consistent rain was falling on a small grey town in Scotland. The drunks had stumbled home hours before and it would be an hour or two before even the most determined fisherman headed out to try his luck. A man and his dog stepped out of a small one bedroom cottage and set off towards the edge of town. The German Shepherd strained at the leash as the man trailed behind, his leather biker jacket zipped up tightly and a knitted black beanie on his head. “Sassie, slow down! ”” the man grumbled as his black boots slid on the wet granite steps of the old footbridge. The powerful animal strained at the leash hauling him to the other side of the river, away from the town. He glanced around making sure they were alone and then unhooked the short leash from her collar. She immediately slowed down and walked smartly beside him. “Why can’t you do that when your leash is on? ” he sighed, now that he had both hands free he pulled a tissue from his pocket and blew his nose depositing the tissue in a waste bin as they walked past. They walked together in silence, Sassie occasionally pausing to inspect a bush or stray leaf before jogging to catch up and falling into place alongside him. Ahead of them was the large village green with a small wooden play park and some benches scattered along the winding paths. The ornamental street lamps gave off a dim orange glow and he could see the reason they were up so early. Rabbits. “Go on then, ” he encouraged, “get’em! ” and with that Sassie raced off into the unsuspecting wildlife. The man sank down on one of the benches, the rain covered seat soaked the back of his jeans. From the middle of the park he watched her racing after the terrified rabbits with a look of pure unadulterated joy on her face as they scattered and scrambled in all directions. She’d never caught one, bloody things were faster in the turns, but the exercise was fantastic and he liked to give her some freedom. She dipped in and out the woods that bordered the park appearing suddenly, scouring the area for rabbits and then promptly vanishing again. He carefully wound the dog leash around his hand and sniffed loudly as he began searching for another tissue. He was sick, bored and lonely. The locals were almost all born and raised here, content in their stagnant social circles of childhood friends. Moving here for work had left him pretty isolated and he had needed a reason to get out and meet people, to strike up a conversation with them and so he’d decided to get a dog. Sassie’s profile on the shelters website wasn’t the first he looked at, or the last, but it was the one he came back to again and again. Under rehabilitation after being abused, aggressive and with trust issues, malnourished so she was small for her breed but she had a look to her that spoke to him. The shelter said her owners had taken her to a vet to be put down at 18 months old but the vet had taken her in and called the shelter. It had taken them a few months of rehab to get her into an adoptable condition and they were glad someone was taking an interest. The first visit was an inquisition, the woman from the shelter checking over his home, asking about previous large breed experience and assessing his commitment to the task ahead. The second visit introduced the pair for the first time, after half an hour of disinterest other than the occasional growl in his direction he had been allowed to pick up her rubber ball before she growled and he returned it. This resounding success had the lady from the shelter ecstatic, this was a warmer response than some of the shelter staff had gotten after weeks of trust exercises. The next visit would be permanent. Barking, growling and other strange noises pulled him from his thoughts. He leapt up and began running towards the sounds and yelling Sassie’s name as loudly as he could. Who the hell was out here at this time? Two years they’d been together and she was getting so much better, it had been weeks since she had gone into what he called “rage-mode”. He cursed under his breath, he’d been so damn careful, specifically choosing a time when no-one would be around. There were several flashes through the trees up ahead and he could hear Sassie barking and snarling as well as some weird garbled yelling and hissing. He stepped into a small clearing and saw four strange figures ahead of him wearing some sort of costumes complete with toy rifles, helmets and what looked like stubby tails. A couple of them were spattered with blue goo but none of them seemed hurt, which was a big relief as they were kids judging by their size. As he approached the one on the right turned and saw him. It hissed loudly and all four took off into the woods, shooting over their shoulders as they fled. One of them managed to hit him in the leg and it stung like a son of a bitch. “Hey! ” he cried out, “Where’s my dog? And stop shooting at me you little prick! ” The growing pain in his leg cut through the cold medicine and tiredness and he ducked behind a tree, blue energy blasts landed around him. These weren’t children in costumes or some weird height restricted LARP group. One of them was clumsily trying to circle around behind him. Lunging forward he snatched it’s gun while pushing it backwards, he then kicked it hard in the chest. There was a loud crunch and it flew backwards into a tree before falling to the ground. “Where’s my dog? ” he yelled, clenching his jaw as fear for Sassie began to rise in his chest only to be quenched by white hot anger as he heard more blasts and yelping in the distance. The weird rifle was comically light with a thin pole stock connecting the butt. He couldn’t find the trigger so grasped it like a cricket bat and moved towards where he’d heard Sassie. As he ducked below a branch a figure stepped out from behind the tree raising it’s weapon. He swung the rifle so hard that both it and the helmet visor shattered and sent his attacker sprawling. Inside he saw green and brown scales and amber eyes filled with terror as blue blood flowed from it’s nose slits. The alien fumbled for it’s rifle and he slammed the broken end of his makeshift club down into the broken visor. The creature twitched and lay still, after a few seconds the gurgling stopped and he let go of the broken rifle. “Where’s. My. Dog? ” his voice boomed, dripping with malice as the adrenaline screamed through his veins. Two shots struck his back, the leather jacket making the energy blasts feel like weak electric shocks you’d get from some truth or dare game. He spun, roared and charged at the two attackers causing one to simply turn and flee as he snatched the other by the neck hoisting it into the air. “Where is she? ” the creature hung limply in his grasp, it’s weapon on the ground. It’s eyes had gone vacant and he threw it aside chasing after the other. He could hear others through the trees ahead of him, a rushed garbled language and hissing. He spotted an alien lying still on the ground and two more up ahead, blue blood was spattered everywhere with four fingered hand prints on the trees leading forward. As he reached the tree line where the woods met farmland he stopped dead and stared at the ship which was currently being loaded. It was the size of a large static caravan and about as ugly and boxy, in a dull grey finish with stubby wings it looked like a cheap prop from a bad sci-fi movie. Facing him was a loading ramp and half a dozen creatures were carrying small cages packed with rabbits onto the ship. Another half dozen were standing guard, weapons ready as the one he’d been following ran towards them, flailing its arms and making more hissing and screeching noises. The way the others readied their weapons and looked his way left no doubt what it was yelling about. He was about to duck and run when he saw Sassie, lying on a small hovering platform that was being loaded onto the ship. She wasn’t moving and he was already charging forward before his brain could tell him how stupid this was. With one arm in front of his face he ran forward, energy blasts flying past with surprisingly few hitting him. His jacket was providing some protection but his legs felt like they were being whipped with electricity, it barely slowed his run. He barreled into the six guards who had moved to intercept him, he swung wildly and caught the first across the side of the head, the armour shattered and the creature fell to the floor. Another punch, a swift kick they seemed to drop like flies and their armour was useless. Hope soared before everything went white and he was hurled backwards landing hard in the wet mud. His vision blurred and as consciousness left him he could hear the hissing get closer. Mission Summary Seeker of Hope - Darnian Exploration Vessel Mission Start Date: 09-4-03-13238 Objective 1: Travel beyond the area known as the Void. Completed 03-2-01-13239 Captain Solvek of House La’Tarn Comments: New fourth generation long haul cryopod successful with ninety-six percent survival, eight percent above projection. Science Officer Tomen of House Fa’Jun was lost and so we welcome Science Officer Skraed of my own House La’Tarn to his new position. I am so proud of this crew and this new vessel we will call home for the next ten Celes. This is the culmination of our people's efforts to save our world. We have broken the boundaries of that which was thought possible. Beyond the void our salvation awaits, I feel it in my scales. Objective 2: Find an extreme condition world with potential life. Completed 10-4-02-13241 Failure - irradiated life - planetwide fauna and flora in collapse. Captain Solvek of House La’Tarn *Comments:*The systems beyond the void are as lifeless as we feared however if one world can spawn life there must be others. Our search will go on with renewed hope. Completed 03-1-04-13244 Failure - mosses and lichens only. Captain Solvek of House La’Tarn Comments: Our mission is almost halfway through it’s expected length and we have found only two worlds amongst scores of systems scanned. We will not falter in this test, may Neksil guide us. Completed 06-3-02-13250 Failure - limited life, toxic to Darnian physiology. Captain Solvek of House La’Tarn Comments: We are at the limits of our resources for a safe return and another world spits in our face with it’s mockery of life. For our families we will push ever forward. Captain Solvek of House La’Tarn 10-4-10-13252 Comments: We are beyond the expected time frame of our mission. By Neksil we will continue. These lifeless systems stretch on for eternity, clearly forsaken by any gods. Our resources are almost spent yet, if we fail then so does our world. I would rather die with hope before returning to failure. Completed 04-3-07-13256 Captain Solvek of House La’Tarn Comments: Despite hostile planetary conditions there is life, it is abundant and varied. Sentient lifeforms are apparent and our mission has become one of stealth and observation. Despite Gal. Fed. rules regarding non FTL sentients we are pressing ahead. The needs of Darnis come first. Due to extreme rationing most of the crew are now in Cryo sleep. With renewed hope we awaken them to finally complete our mission. I hate to admit I was close to despair. We have reached the limits of our supplies and resourcefulness. Our return journey must now be made in Cryo and we can only pray to Neksil that some of us survive. Objective 3: Locate new food source. Completed 06-3-07-13256 Captain Solvek of House La’Tarn Comments: We have found a small herbivore species which survives various environmental conditions, including those far worse than Darnis now endures after our industrial expansion. It breeds rapidly, if we combine this with clone tech for initial population seeding and the lack of natural predators the potential numbers provided by Science Officer Skraed are astounding. The vast grasslands that can no longer support the Trinok herds will be an unparalleled paradise for the new food stock. Mission Mandate - Authorisation Captain Solvek of House La’Tarn 06-3-07-13256 Classify all locally recovered data to Captain or above. Comments: What we have discovered so far is brutality unheard of in any known sentient. I must not panic the crew as our mission is vital to our peoples survival. What monsters lurk below? I will investigate their data networks and secure what I can for military intelligence. First Officer Javek of House Ta’Nur 08-3-07-13256 Comments: The Captain is acting unusually and spending all of his time looking at the local visual records. I have assumed mission command without his objection. We believe their crude systems may be able to detect us. Under no circumstances must our presence be discovered - all non-essential systems to be shut down. We must no longer access their information networks as we have discovered they are tracking this “internet” as well. First Officer Javek of House Ta’Nur 01-4-07-13256 Comments: We can not wait, protocols be damned. The Captain is sobbing and chanting our death songs alone in his cabin and the crew are becoming increasingly hesitant. This world feels ominous, staring out at us hungrily. We will retrieve the specimens and begin our journey home immediately. I have authorised four shuttles to gather specimens from different environmental conditions to maximise genetic variety within as short a window as possible. We will take what Darnis needs by force if necessary. Objective 4: Retrieve samples of new food source. Completed 01-4-07-13256 Shuttle 1 - Recovered all required arid adapted samples. One dead to encounter with venomous wildlife. Two dead attempting to retrieve the first, further recovery abandoned. One dead to an amphibian lizard, body not found. Two missing. Shuttle 2 - Recovered half of the cold weather adapted samples Evacuated early due to detection of incoming local military aircraft and heavily armoured land vehicles. Six dead and fifteen requiring emergency care due to extreme temperatures. Shuttle 3 - Failure Lost contact 23 div after entering the atmosphere, no energy weapons detected - no further contact. Shuttle 4 - Recovered all grassland adapted samples Four dead and seven wounded to a local predator. Nine dead in an encounter with local lifeform, including four dead by friendly fire as shuttle weaponry was deployed. First Officer Javek of House Ta’Nur Comments: Three of four shuttles returned and we have acquired over half of the required samples. The Captain insists we depart immediately. Science Officer Skraed believes we have enough genetic variation for population stability and so I have ordered our return to Darnis. We can not return to the surface as military activity across the planet has become frenzied, it seems we have poked the Folgen hive. Captain Solvek of House La’Tarn 01-4-07-13256 Comments: We have captured one of the monsters this world created and secured it in Cryo. I have ordered it’s pod welded shut and posted guards. Field reports state that energy rifles were ineffective and they resorted to shuttle weaponry. What have we done? Should these creatures learn from our lost crew and craft they could soon be amongst the stars. They will bring death to the universe on wings we gifted them. First Officer Javek of House Ta’Nur 02-4-07-13256 Comments: Science Officer Skraed has reported that the wounds of the expeditionary force have become infected. All wounded are now in Cryo until our return. May Neksil preserve them. First Officer Javek of House Ta’Nur 04-4-07-13256 Comments: We have cleared the inhabited system and begun preparations for FTL. Our journey home must be spent in Cryo as we have exhausted our supplies. The samples will reach our people and Darnis will survive. First Officer Javek of House Ta’Nur 05-4-07-13256 Comments: More strange symptoms are appearing amongst the crew including those not on the expeditionary force. All sick are immediately quarantined and returned to Cryo. Science Officer Skraed has been struck blind and is now also in Cryo. The Captains condition continues to deteriorate, he now visits the pod containing the alien lifeform regularly to ensure it is still frozen. There is madness in his eyes, he does not eat or sleep. Captain Solvek of House La’Tarn 05-4-07-13256 Comments: All recorded nav points and navigational information regarding space beyond the void will be erased. We must return home and ensure no Darnian, in fact no member of the Galactic Federation ever crosses the Void. Objective 4: Return samples to Darnis Estimated arrival 04-1-08-13268 First Officer Javek of House Ta’Nur 06-4-07-13256 Comments: We have thirty dead and almost all crew are displaying symptoms. I have given the order to abandon all safety protocols and to return all crew to Cryo immediately. We have entered our course and will have to pray that some of us survive Cryo. We cast ourselves into the care of Neksil. Captain Solvek of House La’Tarn 06-4-07-13256 Comments: They are the demons lurking beyond the darkness, the Void we crossed was a gateway to hell and beyond it we found a world inhabited by death itself. I have seen what they do to their own and our worlds will burn should they find us. Visions of these creatures and what they are capable of haunt my waking dreams. Next.

Thanks for this vid. Finally helps me sleep. Inside the rain synopsis. I think the creator will never notice me but 100% Recommended.
